As a leader in the local church I get, on occasion, Christians who are disappointed about the needs that the church ISN’T meeting in their lives. Their list is usually a combination of things, all of which I’ve heard before. My pastoral heart goes out to them, even when the criticism is cutting. I remind myself that painful remarks come from a pain-filled heart. Hurt people hurt people, etc. etc.
To those who have been walking in the Faith for some time, however, I have a new response. Watch this:
There are 6926 unreached people groups in this world; 2.83 BILLION people… 41% of the world’s population, according to The Joshua Project (http://www.joshuaproject.net/ ).
Now, what was your question?
Are we really going to nit-pick the preaching and complain about leadership styles here in America? Are we so fat in the faith that we have the luxury to do so? There are Billions of people who don’t know what they are missing because they have never heard the Name of Jesus. They have ZERO access to the Gospel or the Bible. We need vibrant churches made up of outward focused Christ-followers so that the Great Commission can be accomplished.
Definition of ‘Unreached’
A people group or city among which there is no indigenous community of believing Christians with adequate numbers and resources to evangelize this people group. Depending on the source, an oft-quoted benchmark is — that no more than 2-5% of the people describe themselves as evangelical believers. (http://u4theu.com/index.php/about/ )
A lie from the enemy is that the church exists to meet your needs. The truth is that your life was purchased back, redeemed by the blood of Jesus, and you belong to Him. Now your purpose in life is to be about His purpose. You exist for His Mission. Jesus’ Mission is to seek and to save what was lost (Luke 19:10). He came, not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).
I am excited about the local church and our part in God’s plan to reach the nations. We’ve been Commissioned to ‘make disciples’ (Matthew 28:16-20). Let’s get on with it! May there be people groups in Heaven for all eternity because we’ve been faithful to the Mission of Jesus!
